First-party sources left a lot of restaurants with no fees reported, even ones we know charge them. We’re adding Google reviews, Yelp reviews, and Reddit as second-party sources, clearly tagged and dated.

We checked every restaurant we could find in both metro areas against its own website. San Francisco's fees cluster small and are usually about health-care costs. Seattle's cluster large and are usually just the tip renamed.

Reddit threads and Google reviews about a restaurant's fees are usually sincere. What we learned figuring out mandatory fees: the problem isn't honesty, it's how many steps sit between the review and the actual policy.
